ABOUT Jefferson's worn many hats in his life. He's been a portal jumper, a thief, a con artist, a husband, a widower, a single father, a mushroom forager, a hatter, and a madman. He's worked with the Dark One, the Evil Queen, and Dr. Frankenstein. He's been rich, and he's been poor. He's lived in the Enchanted Forest, Wonderland, and Storybrooke, and he's experienced more worlds than just about anybody else. Life was pretty great-- until it all went to hell. NOTES While I keep the name 'Priscilla,' and the thief background for his wife, I don't include Tea Party in March as part of Jefferson's background. His behavior in "Hat Trick" makes no sense if the comic is included in canon. Besides, that version of the March Hare is awful.
Assorted headcanon:
- Time in Wonderland moves differently. IDK why else he'd go that nuts and make that many hats in what seems to be a really short span of time between "Hat Trick" and Regina casting the curse.
- Jefferson is totally the one who braided Grace's hair, which is why it's uneven.
- In addition to cartography and millinery, Jefferson also occupied his time in Storybrooke with various hobbies. After all, he has a cello, a guitar, and a piano in his house. Might as well use them.
- He has spotty knowledge of pop culture, picking up things from whatever he's seen in his sporadic TV watching and radio listening from 1983-2011.
- He knows a lot more about music, history, and literature than film and television.
- His favorite music is 1960s/1970s rock, particularly experimental musicians. So far, he's referenced Jefferson Airplane (OBVS), The Mothers of Invention, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix.
- Despite growing up fairly poor, he has zero money management skills. As a thief, he tended to spend as soon as he was paid, often on frivolous things so he could pretend to live like a prince.

PERSONALITY Jefferson's the sort of guy who adapts so wholly to his circumstances that he essentially becomes a new person whenever there's a turning point in his life. While growth and change are normal parts of the human experience, Jefferson takes reinvention several steps further, doing it so completely that it's like he's trying to give David Bowie a run for his money. He's a sketchy but charismatic conman, wearing fashionable, showy outfits as he peddles lies. He's an impoverished, struggling single dad, devoted to his daughter, but weighted down by his inability to really provide. He's the Mad Hatter, utterly fixated on a single, impossible task to the point of mental deterioration. He's the eccentric recluse, charming one minute, and giving off major serial killer vibes the next.
There are, of course, some things about Jefferson that are consistent throughout his life. He can be short-sighted, acting without much thought as to the long-term consequences of his actions. He can be somewhat cowardly or spineless, choosing to run or hide rather than face things head-on. He can be seduced by money, luxury, and comfort, and in turn, that can be used to manipulate him. And he can be selfish, even as he tries to put his daughter first.
Even when Jefferson tries to do the right thing, he's got terrible judgment. He can hold a grudge, and he can be quite dishonest. He has no qualms with being duplicitous. However, for as dangerous as he can seem when pushed to the edge, he doesn't have it in him to actually kill anyone. He's not even violent, really, even when he's putting on a threatening demeanor. He's still an asshole, though, and he has no problems drugging, kidnapping, or waving a gun at people.

APPEARANCE Jefferson stands at slightly above-average height (5'11"), with a lean and unimposing build. He's the kind of guy who looks like he'd rather get out of a conflict through persuasion and sneakiness than fists and force. With blue eyes and very expressive features, he tends to wear his feelings openly-- or give the impression that he is, if he's pulling an act. Jefferson prefers to be clean-shaven, and his hairstyle varies based on where he's at in his life. In his younger, carefree days, his short, brown hair is rather unkempt, in a perpetual state of bed-head. When he's raising Grace as an impoverished single father (and, later, trapped in Wonderland and losing his mind), his hair's about chin-length, wavy, and he's got some kick-ass sideburns. In Storybrooke, it's short and styled.
One thing that's consistent throughout his life: he likes to wear pretty stylish outfits, and he likes to layer: waistcoats, long jackets, scarves/ascots/cravats, hats, knee-high boots, in addition to, you know, shirts and pants. Each article of clothing tends to be patterned and they're of various different fabrics and leather trims, but coordinated in some capacity, so it's clear that he enjoys fashion and dressing himself up. He also, regardless of canon point, wears a couple of tacky rings because he's A Very Cool Guy.
Oh, and at any point after his imprisonment in Wonderland, he's got a really obvious scar that goes all the way around his neck. But he'll usually keep it covered with a scarf or an ascot.
