character information
● name: Jefferson
● canon: Once Upon a Time
● canon point: 2x02, "We Are Both" - After he flips a table and runs away from Prince Charming.
● age: It's Complicated. ~29
● (canon) background: Enchanted Forest History | Storybrooke History
● (original) world: N/A
● abilities: Jefferson's a portal jumper, which means that while pretty much anyone can just open a portal if they have the right materials for it (a magic bean, a magic hat, a magic tree-- magic's the keyword here), he's somebody who knows how to navigate with more precision, to the point where he can reach a hand into his hat and pick up an apple from a particular place and time in another world. It's not a magical ability or anything, just a skill he picked up over the years. Of course, since he doesn't even have his hat here or back home, it's a pretty useless skill at the moment.
Jefferson's also probably adept at general thieving skills, like pickpocketing, lockpicking, sneaking around, etc. He's skilled at foraging and has knowledge of which plants and fungi are safe to eat (and sell) and which aren't. Oh, and he's clearly a talented milliner, because look at all these hats he's made. And given that 1) he clearly knows his way around a needle and thread and fabric shears and all that, 2) various pieces of set dressing in his home in the Enchanted Forest point to weaving and sewing, and 3) he and Grace are pretty well dressed for poor peasants, it's pretty safe to assume that he's also skilled at clothes making, as well.
● strengths:
Open-Minded & Adaptable: As a man who spent years traveling to other lands, each with their own rules, customs, and magic, Jefferson has a vast breadth of knowledge about different worlds, and he can get by in new places without too much issue. He thinks on his feet, and is clever, cunning, and a convincing liar. As a result of his years of travel, Jefferson's rather open-minded, and he's not shocked easily. He's ready to believe what others might dismiss as impossible.
Charming: There was a time when Jefferson was this charming, outgoing, and affable fellow. Sure, his morals were... questionable, but he was likable enough to appear harmless to others, even as he was running a con on them. Though he's a far cry from that man these days, he's capable of slipping back into that demeanor when it suits him. Jefferson's seemingly effortless charm can be completely disarming, even to people who are usually good judges of character (see: Emma Swan).
Devoted: At his best, Jefferson can be a kind, devoted, hardworking person. He's capable of selflessness, sacrificing a lucrative and exciting life of portal jumping to raise his daughter as a single father. Though Jefferson going legit left him and Grace in a position where they're barely scraping by in poverty, he'd give his very last coin to make her happy. His love for his daughter gives him some strength. For Grace, Jefferson can be driven and tenacious. For as broken as he can be, he's never so far gone that he completely gives up on his ultimate goal to get back to her.
HE'S A VERY GOOD TRYER: He really tries, bless him. Jefferson fails in many respects, but he really does try to do what's best-- for Grace, anyway.
● weaknesses:
Weak-willed & has hilariously bad judgment: There's an all-around weakness of character in Jefferson, even before Wonderland (and the curse) broke his spirit. He doesn't possess much resolve, he rolls over easily, and his healthy coping skills are nonexistent. Against his better judgment, Jefferson's easily seduced by money, luxury, and comfort, which makes him easy to manipulate. Even when Jefferson tries to put his daughter first, he can be extremely selfish about it, convincing himself that whatever bad thing he does is for her sake (and thus: justified). And he'll fall for the same trick by the same person (Regina) more than once, without ever seeming to learn from it.
Cowardly: He can be somewhat cowardly or spineless, choosing to run or hide rather than face things head-on. For as dangerous as he can appear, he doesn't have it in him to actually follow through on threats. Sure, that could be seen as some strength of character in another person, but with Jefferson, it's not because of any moral conviction. He lacks the resolve to do it himself, and would rather set up circumstances for others to get his revenge for him.
Mad as a Hatter: When he's not putting on a charming act, Jefferson tends to come across as off-putting, disturbing, and dangerously delusional. Sometimes, he seems like he's about two seconds away from launching into unpredictable violence, though he generally won't. He isn't delusional; however, his years in Wonderland, plus 28 years trapped in a living hell, have taken their toll on Jefferson. He's a shell of the man he used to be, and he's not always good at hiding it. He's become a reclusive shut-in, single-minded and obsessed, fixated on repeating the same action again and again for decades.
● job skills (optional): Tailoring/millinery, thieving, and he's had 28 years to teach himself how to play several instruments?? Oh and he makes a mean cup of tea. Personally, I've played him doing tailoring jobs enough that I'm happy to... not... have him work as a tailor here, even though it's a skill he'd mention and a perfectly reasonable career path.
